Balanced Tigers bounce Brookville

West Liberty-Salem’s boys basketball team used a balanced effort to roll past Brookville on Saturday in the opening round of the Division III sectional tournament at Tecumseh High School.

The Tigers had three players score in double figures as they recorded a 55-37 victory.

WL-Salem is now 18-5 on the season and advances to play Waynesville at 8 p.m. Tuesday in a sectional semifinal matchup at Tecumseh.

Grant Burden paced the Tigers with 16 points. Travis Mayse had 14 points and Landon Hormann also hit double figures with 13 points.

Max Bailey chipped in seven points to aid the win.

“I have said all season that teams face a two-way street with Landon,” said WL-Salem head coach Aaron Hollar. “They can try to double down on him, but then that opens up our outside guys for open shots. If they don’t double Landon, he is going to be a handful inside.

“Brookville tried to take away Landon and he did a good job of getting the ball to our guys outside and they responded by knocking down shots.”

The Tigers buried eight three-pointers. Mayse had three, Bailey and Grant Burden each hit two and Ben Burden added one.

WL-Salem was 8-of-13 (62 percent) from long range and shot 51 percent overall.

The Tigers led 13-9 after one quarter and 28-19 at halftime.

“I thought our defensive effort was pretty solid,” said Hollar. “We settled in defensively as the game went on and ended up holding them to 27-percent shooting. Any time you can hold a team to a shooting percentage like that, you are going to feel good about your chances.”

The Tigers increased their lead to 14 points (39-25) after three quarters.

WL-Salem continued to pull away in the final period, outscoring the Blue Devils 16-12.

Luke Landis led Brookville (7-16) with 16 points.

The Tigers now turn their attention to Waynesville, which defeated Covington 65-52 on Saturday.

“They have three guards that really get after it, both offensively and defensively,” said Hollar. “We have to contain those guys and force them to take tough shots.”
