Pirates break through for first win, top Lakers 63-53

Riverside’s boys basketball team broke through for its first win of the season Tuesday after dropping host Indian Lake 63-53 in a non-league contest.

The Pirates are now 1-7 on the season, while the Lakers fall to 1-9.

“It feels really good to get that first win,” said RHS head coach Don Epps. “We’ve had a tough season so far and our kids have hung in there and fought every game. They continue to work to get better.

“We’ve had some good games in the past week and just haven’t been able to get it done. It all came together in this game, though. I thought our starters did well and the guys we substituted in did well, too. It was a total team effort.”

Riverside jumped out to a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Pirates outscored the Lakers 17-12 in the second quarter to hold a comfortable 34-20 advantage at halftime.

“We shot the ball well and didn’t get behind to start the game,” said Epps. “We came out strong and didn’t have to fight to get ourselves out of an early hole. Our intensity and the tempo in the first quarter were key for us.”

The Pirates stayed in control in the second half. They led 47-32 after three quarters.

Freshman Landon Kelsey led the Pirates with 16 points, Dalton Bollinger had 14 points, six rebounds and two steals and Kolt Shough added 12 points and seven steals.

“I thought our freshman Landon Kelsey had a great game,” said Epps. “Bollinger had a strong game, too. I thought all of our guys helped contribute in this win.”

Jalon Tuttle and Ivan Reichert led the Lakers with 13 points each. Brennon Lump had 10 points and Christian Grider added eight points.

In junior varsity action, Indian Lake won 41-31. Isaac Miller paced the Lakers with 21 points and Jesse Kean led the Pirates with 10 points.

Riverside hosts Marion Catholic on Friday and Indian Lake travels to Benjamin Logan.
