County Hoops Preview
Any time Mechanicsburg comes to town, West Liberty-Salem knows a battle is in store.
WL-Salem (1-1) already has had two close games this season. The Tigers began with a 54-46 loss to Springfield Shawnee and then held on for a 52-48 victory over Graham on Tuesday.
The Indians (1-2) were runners-up at the Benjamin Logan Tip-Off Classic last weekend and lost to Urbana 53-35 on Tuesday. M’burg is averaging 50.6 points per game, but are giving up 57 ppg.
Junior guard Brandon Purk has been the spark of Mechanicsburg’s offense so far this year, while junior post Nick Callicoat and senior post Brandon Welch have also been weapons.
“They are a really good team,” said WL-Salem coach Aaron Hollar. “Purk can play and so can Callicoat. The Welch kid was a surprise last weekend and is good, too.
