Triad also represented on all-state team
A second straight undefeated regular season paid off with three all-state selections for the West Liberty-Salem football team on Wednesday.
The Tigers’ Ross Hickenbottom, Alex Gardner and Landon Hormann were each named to the Associated Press Division V all-Ohio special mention list.
“Those three have worked extremely hard over the course of their careers,” said WL-Salem head coach Toby Smith of his three honorees. “They are very deserving of their accolades.”
Triad was also represented on the Division V all-state team as Seth Collier received a special mention selection.
A senior wide receiver/defensive back, Hickenbottom was a big-play threat for the high-powered Tigers’ offense. He made 32 catches for 645 yards and five touchdowns. He averaged 20 yards per catch.
“You could always count on Ross when you needed a big play,” said Smith. “He did not really have to even be open. All we had to do was get the ball in his general area and he would go make a play.”
Gardner, a senior, anchored an offensive line. He helped open holes for an offense that piled up more than 3,000 rushing yards.
“Alex worked extremely hard for us,” said Smith. “He made himself into a very good football player.”
Also a senior, Hormann was an impact player on both sides of the ball for the Tigers. He recorded nine sacks as a defensive end and caught 27 passes for 383 yards and nine touchdowns as a receiver.
“The longer Landon played for us the more you noticed other teams game planning for him on defense and making sure they knew where he was at on offense,” said Smith.
Hickenbottom, Gardner and Hormann were part of a senior class that won forty games during their WL-Salem careers.
Collier was the leader for the Cardinals from his spot on the offensive line. A senior, he helped get the Cardinals back to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
