Bellefontaine’s girls basketball team opened the season with an impressive 51-44 win over host Wapakoneta on Friday in the first round of the Redskins’ Tip-Off Tournament.

The Chiefs (1-0) advance to play Waynesfield-Goshen in tonight’s championship game at 7:45 p.m. at Wapakoneta. W-Goshen beat Troy in its first-round game Friday.

“It is nice to open the season with a win,” said Bellefontaine head coach Brian Hogan. “It has been a while since we’ve done that. The girls did a good job of playing together and battling through some adversity.”

Wapakoneta jumped out to a 19-13 advantage after one quarter, but Bellefontaine turned the tide in the second period.

The Chiefs outscored the hosts 17-10 in the second quarter to lead 30-29 at halftime.

Bellefontaine was six points better (21-15) in the second half to grab the win.

“Our intensity and focus was good tonight,” said Hogan. “We gave up 19 points in the first quarter and I think that is more than we gave up during any quarter in our scrimmages. But our girls battled through that and buckled down the rest of the game.

“Over the last three quarters, we forced them into some shots they didn’t want to take and we also forced them into some turnovers.”

It was a balanced offensive effort for the Chiefs. Brenda Johnson led Bellefontaine with 10 points, while Regan Price, Kameren Haley and Jazmyn Haley each scored nine points.

Sajah Carter contributed eight points and Whitney Rader chipped in six points.

Jazmyn Haley led Bellefontaine in rebounds with nine and Price had four assists.
