GAME OF THE WEEK: Tigers blow out M’burg to reach 8-0

West Liberty-Salem kept rolling Friday night as the visiting Tigers routed Mechanicsburg 42-19 in Ohio Heritage Conference action.

The Tigers remain perfect at 8- 0 overall and 5-0 in the OHC, while the Indians drop to 2-6, 1-4.

The win was the 22nd straight regular season victory for the Tigers.

WL-Salem turned in a balanced offensive effort Friday with 477 yards of total offense. The Tigers had 249 rushing yards and 228 passing yards.

Travis Mayse got WL-Salem off and running in the first quarter Friday with a 60-yard touchdown run.

Mechanicsburg struck back quickly when quarterback Colin Vernon threw a 17-yard TD pass to Brandon Purk. That tied the game 7-7.

WL-Salem quarterback Riley Sims took control and put his team back in front with two touchdown runs. He scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards to give the Tigers a 21-7 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw Vernon hook up with Purk again on another 17-yard touchdown pass. The extra-point attempt missed, making the score 21-13.

Sims added a third touchdown run for the Tigers in the third quarter on a 15-yard jaunt, making the score 28-13.

Mechanicsburg’s Aeryton Erwin scored on an 8-yard touchdown run to pull the Indians to within nine points at 28-19.

The Tigers pulled away, though, in the fourth quarter. Taylor Cordell had a 44-yard TD run and Mayse had an 8-yard trip to the end zone.

Sims led the WL-Salem offense with 104 rushing yards and three touchdowns and 228 passing yards. Mayse finished with 83 rushing yards and two scores and Landon Hormann tallied 106 receiving yards.

Defensively for the Tigers, Cordell recorded an interception.

WL-Salem hosts Cedarville on Friday for OHC action.
