Chiefs look to avoid three-game losing streak against Wapakoneta in opener

Redskins coming off a memorable 2011 season

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The Chiefs will try to slow down a dangerous Wapakoneta ground attack that includes senior tailback Josh Windle, above.

Wapakoneta treated Bellefontaine’s football team to an ugly start to the season in each of the last two years.

Bellefontaine hopes to avoid a similar season opener Friday as the Chiefs welcome Wapakoneta to Dodd Field for a Week 1 matchup.

In head coach Doug Frye’s first game with the Redskins in 2010, Wapak used its Wing T offense to grind out a 42-10 win over the Chiefs.

A year ago, the Redskins rolled to a 48-0 shutout on their way to a 10-2 season. It marked only the third time in school history they won 10 games in a season and was just the second time the Redskins were victorious in a playoff game.

Although Wapak lost 1,900-yard rusher Connor Pickens to graduation, the Redskins have the firepower to turn in another successful campaign this fall.

“This is a very similar team to the one they had last year,” said BHS head coach Chris Schmidt. “They are an older, experienced team. They attack you in an aggressive manner offensively and they have that same aggressive mindset defensively.”
