Carl E. Beard, 95, of Springfield, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Green Hills Community of West Liberty.
He was born in Springfield on Feb. 21, 1918, a son of the late Charles E. and Golda M. Pendergraff Beard. He also was preceded in death by wife, Geneva M. Beard; sons, Steven R. Beard; and Dale (Ruth) Beard; a brother, Chester; and a sister, Thelma.
Carl is survived by his wife, Joyce Kauffman-Beard of Bellefontaine; a daughter, Barbara (Kenneth) King of Urbana; daughter-in-law, Sandie Beard of Tipp City; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and treasured nieces, nephews and friends.
A graduate of Springfield High School, Carl retired from Curtis 1000 Inc., greatly enjoying a 30-year career in salesmanship.
Carl was a veteran of WWII and was the first inductee from Springfield under the Selective Service Act, leaving on Nov. 22, 1940, more than a year before Pearl Harbor.
He was an aviation cadet with flight and navigation training in the U.S. Air Corps. He also served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines and was awarded the American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and two Bronze Stars. He was discharged with honor Dec. 18, 1945.
Carl was a lifelong follower of Jesus Christ and was a member of Crossway Vineyard Church in Urbana.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Jackson Lytle & Lewis Life Celebration Center, Springfield, where a funeral begins at 11 a.m. Monday. Entombment is in Rose Hill Mausoleum.
