Bessie L. Mazzagotte Mortimer, 86, of Butler, passed away Friday evening, Feb. 8, 2013, in Knox Community Hospital, Mt. Vernon, following a long illness.

She was born in Akron on March 10, 1926, to the late Stanley and Eva Hodges Mazzagotte. She also was preceded in death by her stepfather, Steve Belinski.

In 1945, she married Robert A. Mortimer, the son of Frank and Ruth Maier Mortimer. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary Feb. 3, 2013.

A wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, Bessie is survived by her husband; three sons, Robert S. and Barbara Mortimer of Butler, Wesley A. (Susan) Mortimer of Butler and Steven R. (Mary) Mortimer of Bellefontaine; nine grandchildren, William R. (Bobbie) Mortimer of Butler, Andrew S. Mortimer of Butler, Wesley Jr. (Brenda) Mortimer of Waynesfield, Tonya (Gary) Green of Butler, Chris (Kristy) Mortimer of Mt. Vernon, Carrie (Matt) Harriman of Ontario, James (Amanda Lipscomb) Mortimer of Perrysville, Lisa (Joel) Dennis of East Hampton, N.Y., and Heather (Pierre-Henri) Mortimer-Charoy of Paris, France; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a brother, George Mazzagotte of Pensacola, Fla.

A 1944 graduate of Palmyra High School in Portage County, Bessie was a talented cook and baker, especially when it came to her homemade pies.

In addition to caring for her family of three boys, Bessie helped manage the family dairy farm in rural Knox County.

She enjoyed flower gardening, knitting and crocheting, and reading.

A memorial service is at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are encouraged to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Central Ohio Chapter, 2225 Citygate Drive, Suite E, Columbus 43219.
