Chester ‘Chet’ Large Jr.

Chester ”Chet” Large Jr., 88, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, in Grant Medical Center, Columbus.

He was born in Circleville on Nov. 13, 1924, a son of the late Chester Arthur and Elsie Mae Whaley Large. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Mary (Richard) Buskirk; a brother, Gene Large; brothers-in-law, Ron Gool and Merrill Allen; a sister-in-law, Rosie Large; a nephew, Glennie Large; and a host of friends.

Chet is survived by his wife of 65 years, Geraldine Shonkwiler Large; daughter, Debra (Michael) Love of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Heidi (Tony) Love-Jackson and Ryan (Terri) Love; great-grandsons, Cooper and Carson Love and Gabriel and Micah Jackson; his brothers, Glen (Vicki Wilt) Large and Paul (Ann) Large; his sisters, Anna Mae Allen, Pauline Gool, Ruth (Dallas) Elliott and Virginia (Richard) Ankrom; his sister-in-law, Bonnie Large; and 23 nieces and nephews, including special niece, Lesa.

Chet served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and owned and operated Chet’s IGA Market for 51 years.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, boating, traveling, playing horseshoes, fast-pitch softball and basketball, and was a loyal fan of Mechanicsburg athletics.

He was a member of the Mechanicsburg Lions Club, Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, and L.S.T. Association through the Navy.

Chester contributed to the youths of Mechanicsburg and supported the county fair. He was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Lions Club.

Rev. Dr. Paul Large officiates a funeral at noon Thursday at Skillman, McDonald & Vernon Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg, where visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial is in Somerford Cemetery, London, Ohio.
