Stephen Dale Hartley, 61, of Huntsville, passed away Saturday evening, Nov. 24, 2012, in the Mary Rutan Hospital Emergency Department.
He was born in Dayton on July 27, 1951, to the late Lewis and Dorothy Pearson Hartley. He also was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Everett Nelson.
On June 27, 1970, he married the former Linda Nelson in Dayton and she survives, along with his son, Scott D. Hartley of Independence, Ky.; three grandchildren, Justin Dale Hartley, Steven Richard Hartley and Madison Michelle Hartley; a sister, Coni (Wayne) Stanley of West Virginia; his mother-in-law, Della Nelson of Chillicothe; and several family members and friends.
A 1969 graduate of Meadowdale High School in Dayton, he was a police officer with the Dayton Police Department for more than 13 years, retiring in 1995. Prior to his police service, he worked at Dayton Tire and Rubber.
He was a member of Muchinippi Christian Church, Lewistown, FOP Captain John C. Post 44 and John W. Durst 716 F&AM, both in Dayton, and Indian Lake Moose Lodge 1533 in Lakeview.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and wintering in Florida. He used Facebook to keep in touch and gave inspiration to many of his friends through his daily posts.
He loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren and his special dog, Midge.
A gathering of remembrance is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview.
