Elaine Pennington, 86, a lifetime resident of North Lewisburg, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, in Springfield Regional Medical Center.
She was born July 12, 1926, at home in North Lewisburg, a daughter of the late Ethel Mary Bloomquist and Lawrence Harlow Burroughs.
On April 21, 1945, she married Joseph Pennington Jr. and he also preceded her in death, along with her daughter, Sally Jo Pennington; her brothers, Earl Harlow and William Clark Burroughs; and sisters, Mary Blanche Cowgill, Hazel Anna Johnson, Florence Ellen Welch, Ruth Lavon Simpson and Ethel May Scheiderer.
She is survived by her daughters, Margaret Ann “Peggy” Vallery of Tavares, Fla., and Mary Melissa Cunningham of Marysville; sister, Pearl Elizabeth Collinson of Marysville; grandchildren, Scott (Sharon) Vallery of Bellbrook, Shawn (Lori) Vallery of Tiffin, Alasun (Cory) Hoffmann of Dallas, Texas, Breanna Cunningham and Joseph Cunningham, both of Marysville; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Lydia and Jackson Vallery of Tiffin; special friends, Pat Phillips of North Lewisburg and Wilda James of Urbana; and several nieces and nephews.
A 1944 graduate of North Lewisburg High School, Elaine retired after 30 years of service as a cook from Triad High School. She supported the school by selling tickets for the different athletic events well into her 80s.
She was very active in the North Lewisburg United Methodist Church for more than 75 years. She sang in the choir, participated in the United Methodist Women and baked many pies for the county fair projects.
Elaine loved music; she enjoyed singing solos, playing the piano and organ and was an avid supporter of the “Marysville Swingers Unlimited Show Choir.”
She loved to travel, but most of all she loved to follow her grandchildren’s activities. Elaine’s lifetime motto was “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you,” and that was how she lived her life.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 and 8 p.m. Friday in the Freshwater, McDonald & Vernon Funeral Home, North Lewisburg.
The Revs. Karen Montgomery and Kathy Reiff officiate a funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday in the North Lewisburg United Methodist Church.
