Arsel Mae Thomas, 89, of Urbana, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 16, 2014, in Mercy McAuley Center, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in North Lewisburg on Feb. 12, 1925, a daughter of the late Arthur Britton and Alta Mae McGinnis Newsome. She also was preceded in death by grandmother, Jesse McGinnis.
She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, John Newman Thomas; her daughters, Mary Michelle (Herb) Porter and Gayle Marie (Steve) Artis, both of Urbana; her son, John Arthur (Karen) Thomas of Westerville; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary Louise Simmons of Dayton; brother-in-law, Herb Thomas of Urbana; sister-in-law, Clementine Williams of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.
A 1943 graduate of Bellefontaine High School, Arsel was a member of Jerusalem Second Baptist Church, where she was active in the Missionary Society and at one time served as the church secretary. In years past, Arsel was active in the Urbana PTA, Church Women United and she also belonged to a knitting club.
She enjoyed visiting and sending cards to friends in care facilities and was known for her apple dumplings. Arsel loved to read and spend time with family, especially her grandchildren.
The Rev. Michael Freeman officiates a funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jerusalem Second Baptist Church, Urbana, where visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the funeral. Burial is in Oak Dale Cemetery, Urbana.
