Robert E. Shields, 72, of Bellefontaine, passed away Monday, June 24, 2013, at The James Cancer Hospital, Columbus, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Bellefontaine on Jan. 12, 1941, a son of the late Albert and Juanita Parker Shields.
On April 28, 1973, he married the former Mary Lu Buscher in Bellefontaine and she preceded him in death Jan. 22, 2004. He also was preceded in death by an infant sister, Wilda Shields; and a son-in-law, Steven L. Skidmore.
Survivors include his first wife, Carol D. Shields, the mother of Robert G. (Margaret) Shields of Bellefontaine, Gary A. (Susie) Shields of Bellefontaine, Lisa C. (David) Zuhlsdorf of Bowling Green, Teresa D. (David) Grubbs of Dublin and Dottie Skidmore of Bellefontaine; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Norma Jean Detterer of Bellefontaine; a brother, Donald (Sue) Shields of Bellefontaine; and close friend Joanne Shaner of Huntsville.
A farmer his entire life, he was a supervisor with Glacier, formerly D.A.B., where he retired in 2003 with more than 40 years of service.
He graduated from Belle Center High School and attended the First Church of God in Bellefontaine. He enjoyed John Wayne movies and westerns, hunting and camping with family, and watching the Green Bay Packers.
Pastor Ray Headings officiates a funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine, where visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service. Burial is in Walnut Hill Cemetery, New Hampshire.
