Helene Carter, 87, of Waynesfield, died at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Mariupol, Ukraine, on Aug. 15, 1925, to the late Nestor and Efrosinia Kartasch Nikolaenko. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Gregory; a sister, Larissa; an infant sister; and her loving in-laws, Everett and Hattie Carter.
She married Joseph Merle Carter and he survives in Waynesfield, along with three sons, Mike (Lois) Carter of Reynoldsburg and Andy Carter and Brian (Louise) Carter, both of Waynesfield; six daughters, Larissa (Mike) Osbun of Huntsville, Loretta (Bill) Diehl of San Diego, Lana Hall of Waynesfield, Tamara Belisle of Lima, Linda (Karl) Wolf of Wapakoneta and Laura (Steve) Shepherd of Gahanna; a sister, Valia of Ukraine; a special cousin, Lena (Wally) Wowk of Strongsville; 23 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Carter babysat for many children in the Waynesfield area. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
During World War II, at the age of 16, she was taken by the Nazis from her family in the Ukraine to Wiesbaden, Germany, where she was forced to work for the Germans. After the U.S. troops liberated Germany, she stayed and worked for the Americans.
In May 1950, Gen. A. Wood Rigsby sponsored her to come to the U.S.A. She first met her husband in 1946 in Wiesbaden when he was in the military. After he returned home from fighting in Korea, they were married Sept. 23, 1951, in Omaha, Neb., and would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary this year.
The Rev. Don Smith officiates a funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at Armentrout Funeral Home, Waynesfield, where visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial is in Fairmount Cemetery, Uniopolis.
Because of severe allergies, the family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Waynesfield Baptist Church and Grand Lake Hospice.
