Doris Jean Custer, 83, of Chillicothe, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013.
Born in Bellefontaine, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Isabelle A. Hatcher Richardson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Walter B. “Bud” Custer, in July 1997; and husband, Joe Johns Jr. in July 1973.
She is survived by a son, the Rev. Steven L. (Gratia) Johns-Boehme of Middletown, Md.; daughter, Joni Johns (Richard S.) Lerner of Redding, Conn.; granddaughters, Alizah Johns-Boehme of Middletown, Md., and Zoe Johns-Boehme of Louisville, Ky.; and a grandson, Isaac Lerner of Redding, Conn.
After graduation from Bellefontaine High School, she was engaged in a variety of positions beyond the home as a Sears teletypist, Columbus Dispatch newspaper distributor, Bellefontaine Parks and Recreation Department summer arts/crafts instructor, and then as a minister’s wife in the congregations where her husband, Walter, served in DeGraff, Dayton and Waverly.
Doris was a master gardener and enjoyed her garden and flowerbeds. She also enjoyed anything she could make with her hands, the wildlife she was surrounded by, yard sales and antiques. She fed and gave shelter to abandoned cats in the area, at one time numbering 15.
She was a member of Walnut Street United Methodist Church, and often attended Dry Run United Methodist Church. She was blessed with friendly and supportive neighbors and friends who provided care and companionship.
For the last nine years, her beloved schnauzer dog, Pepper, was her constant companion.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ware Funeral Home, Chillicothe. Doris wished to be cremated and a private family service for the cremains is at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in her name be directed to P-U-R-R fect Companions Cat Adoption Center, 80 N. Mulberry, Chillicothe 45601.
