Ralph Samuel Lovett, 93, formerly of Urbana, passed away Jan. 24, 2013, at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Edgewood, Ky.

Ralph was born April 3, 1919, in West Liberty, the ninth of 10 children born to the late Samuel K. and Lillie Belle Stallsmith Lovett. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Steele Lovett, in 1988; his second wife, Clarabelle Farrand Lovett, in March 2012; and his son Terry (Joyce)  Lovett, in 1997.

He is the cherished father of Julie (Daniel) Steers of Erlanger, Ky.; the adored and admired Poppy of six grandchildren, Lori (Pat) Stillwagon of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Ami Finn of Florence, Ky., Heidi (Damon) Tucker of Loveland, Angie (John) Scheideler of Ayr, Neb., Jeff (Sandy) Lovett of Bladen, Neb., and Courtney Lovett of Blue Hill, Neb.; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister Erma Shultz of Bellefontaine.

Ralph graduated from Monroe Township High School in 1938 and from Ohio State University in 1942, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science, and served in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps from 1942 to 1946.

In 1948, he established the Lovett Meat Company in Cincinnati and expanded to five other meat packing companies in Ohio and Tennessee, before he retired in 1984. He was inducted into the Ohio State Animal Science Hall of Fame and was a member of Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society of Agriculture and The President’s Club of Ohio State University.

Mr. Lovett was a noted horseman who raised and trained Tennessee Walking Horses on his Union Kentucky farm and showed his horses throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. Later, he raised Standardbred horses. He continued riding until he was 92.

He loved golf and was a member of Clovernook Country Club, Cincinnati, since 1952, a Mason, a Shriner and a life member of the Syrian Temple.

Visitation is one hour prior to a funeral at noon Monday at the Norman Chapel of Spring Grove, Cincinnati.
