Robert E. “Bobby Gene” Hughes, 62, of Sidney, passed away peacefully at 1:20 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in Sidney Care Center.
He was born in Sidney on March 12, 1950, to the late Robert and Avril Pope Hughes. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon Roush Hughes; an infant daughter, Judy Kay; a sister, Linda Kay; and two nephews, Lenny Hughes and Johnny Gammell.
On Sept. 5, 1984, he married the former Carol Thompson in Russells Point, and she survives, along with a daughter, Jennifer (Jack) Rufus of Bellefontaine; a son, Mike (Mollie) Hughes of DeGraff; a sister, Virginia Katherine (Robert) Gammell of Bellefontaine; a brother, Leonard (Vickie) Hughes of Wapakoneta; three grandchildren; three stepchildren, Maryann, Wesley Eugene and Amy Thompson, all of Sidney; six stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
Bobby Gene loved country music and playing his guitar. His many hobbies included being an amateur CB radio operator, using the handle “Wheeler Dealer,” which he enjoyed with his good friend John “Hitman” Ball.
He attended Sidney Apostolic Church with his wife and followed Ohio State Buckeye football. He enjoyed his cats, Garfield, Rosey and Jingles and his dog, Willey.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine. Pastors Leroy Hughes and Mark Hina officiate a graveside service at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Springhills Cemetery.
