Ralph E. Hughes, 83, of Huntsville, passed away Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at his residence.
He was born in McArthur Township on April 19, 1929, a son of the late Lloyd P. and Vera Ruth Franks Hughes. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard C. and Rodney H. Hughes.
On March 26, 1982, he married the former Donna L. Meyers Roth at Indian Lake and she survives, along with 11 children, Jan (Tim) Smith of Bellefontaine, Judy (Eldon) Lambert of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, Jeff Hughes of Marathon, Fla., Gene (Marty) Hughes of Weeki Wachee, Fla., Leeanne Lusby, David (Telisa) Hughes and Bob Roth, all of Bellefontaine, Sandy Walker of Marysville, Calif., Mike (Beth) Roth of Appleton, Wis., Deb (Brent) Jeffers of West Liberty and Nancy (special friend, Jerry Zimmerman) Roth of Xenia; adopted son, John James of Bellefontaine; a brother, Dan (Phylis) Hughes of Kenton; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Alice J. Hughes of Bellefontaine.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a life member of the NRA, Elks Lodge and American Legion Post 173.
He worked as a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service before retiring to spend time with his family and friends on Indian Lake. He enjoyed 23 years wintering in Lake Wales, Fla., spending time with numerous friends fishing and being a big Earnhardt and NASCAR fan.
The Rev. Jim Ellington officiates a funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday at Indian Lake Community Church, Russells Point. Burial with military honors by the Logan County Veteran Honor Guard is in Huntsville Cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Smith-Eichholtz Funeral Home, Lakeview.
