Ohio gov holds almost $8 million in campaign cash

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Gov. John Kasich has close to $8 million in campaign cash on hand at the start of the election year.

Campaign finance reports filed Friday show the Republican governor raised nearly $3.9 million in the second half of last year and received in-kind donations totaling almost $630,000. Kasich's campaign spent about $383,000 over the period.

His likely Democratic challenger, Ed FitzGerald, has yet to file his report. FitzGerald, the Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh) County executive, has been in the race since April 2013. He's expected to be outraised by the incumbent governor.

Four years ago, Kasich ousted incumbent Democrat Ted Strickland in one of Ohio's most expensive gubernatorial contests.

Candidates for the state Legislature and Congress also will report how much they raised and spent through Dec. 31.
