DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty to attempted murder for hitting a 73-year-old woman with a wooden baseball bat has been sentenced in southwest Ohio to 11 years in prison.
Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. says 48-year-old John Mason was sentenced Thursday in Dayton. A message was left for Mason's attorney.
Heck says Mason was convicted in 1987 in Georgia on charges including murder and sentenced to life in prison. But Heck says he was on parole and living with the 73-year-old woman and her daughter in Huber Heights when he struck the older woman in the head Aug. 8. The prosecutor says Mason told authorities he hit her because she was "messing" with him and he wanted to return to prison.
The woman's injuries will require a prosthetic eye.
