Driver pulled from burning vehicle after crash

SIDNEY — Deputies of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an accident that occurred shortly after midnight Wednesday and ended with the driver being pulled from a burning vehicle.

Matthew Larger, 18, of Piqua, reportedly was operating a westbound jeep on Houston Road near Pampel Road when he lost control of the vehicle and drove off the left side of the road. The jeep rolled onto its side in the front yard of 6424 Houston Road, and then it burst into flames.

A passenger, Aaron Felver, 19, of Piqua, was able to get himself out of the vehicle.

A resident at that address was awakened by the accident. The individual observed that Mr. Larger was still in the vehicle, so the resident cut the driver’s seat belt and helped get him away from the fire before the jeep was completely engulfed in flames.

The heat from the flames reportedly melted the overhead power lines and caused them to fall on the jeep.

Firefighters with the Houston Fire Department responded to the scene, but were not able to extinguish the fire until crews with Dayton Power and Light arrived to shut off power.

Houston EMS personnel treated the driver and his passenger at the scene, and both refused to be transported.

Mr. Larger was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and failure to control.
