BARBERTON, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio man was charged with murder after the decomposing body of his 67-year-old mother was found in her home, police said.
Police in Barberton, near Akron, say Maureen Petrie had been dead in the house since October. Officers discovered the body on Wednesday during a welfare check after family members called to say they had had no contact with Petrie and her son.
Michael Petrie, 32, who also was at the house when police arrived, "made statements that implicated himself in his mother's murder," according to a police department news release. The medical examiner's office said she had been stabbed in the chest and head and beaten.
"Family members said they had had no contact with relatives for six months," Barberton police Officer Marty Eberhart told the Akron Beacon Journal.
Michael Petrie appeared in court in Summit County on Thursday, and bail was set at $1 million. He is due back in court on Wednesday. A phone message left with his attorney on Friday seeking comment wasn't immediately returned.
The investigation is continuing into the circumstances that led to the slaying. Barberton police declined to comment further on Friday.
Libby Sampson, 60, who lives across the street, said Maureen Petrie had worked as a machinist.
