Ohio mom sentenced to 3 years in fatal fire

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A woman whose two young daughters died in a fire after she fell asleep while drinking has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Thirty-five-year-old Valerie Windom had pleaded guilty in January to two counts of child endangering in exchange for prosecutors dropping involuntary manslaughter charges.

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/YzORBx ) reports Windom was sentenced Wednesday in the deaths of 7-year-old Treasure Mi Windom-Harris and 5-year-old Tomarra Renee Hackett on Dec. 18, 2011.

Columbus police said Windom was drunk when she fell asleep with food cooking on the stove in her apartment, which started the fire. She awoke about 5 a.m. and managed to escape. The girls were asleep in a second-floor bedroom.

Windom told the judge in court that "I can't apologize enough."
