A Lakeview man was flown to an area hospital following a head-on crash about 10:50 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Route 33 at State Route 708, Russells Point Police Chief Joe Fryhof reports.

Robert Wetzel, 76, was taken by MedFlight helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus after being extricated from his vehicle by Indian Joint Fire District personnel.

Mr. Wetzel was last reported in critical condition at the hospital, according to information provided in a early Sunday afternoon email from Chief Freyhof. Hospital officials, however, declined to provide an update on the patient as of 6:30 p.m.

Reports indicate Mr. Wetzel was driving a westbound 2009 Ford Focus on U.S. 33 when an eastbound Ford F-150 attempting to turn north onto S.R. 708 traveled into his car's path.

The pickup truck's driver, Margie Burkhammer, 18, also of Lakeview, was treated and released by Indian Lake EMS. She was cited for failure to yield at an intersection.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office and Washington Township Police Department assisted at the scene.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene.
