Vicki and Randy Smith of rural Bellefontaine were recognized as the SWCD’s cooperators of the year for the work they have completed and the outlook they have for their 70-acre Jefferson Township property. They developed a conservation action plan which included planting trees protected by tree shelters on which the deer like to scratch their antlers, planting prairie and native grasses, developed a savanna to promote strong undergrowth and installed a vernal pool (temporary wetland) among other conservation programs.
