A Lakeview man was arrested Monday evening for assault on a police officer following an incident that began at a local business and ended with a struggle with Logan County Sheriff’s Office deputies at his residence.
David A. Dematteo, 47, of 290 Stephenson St., Apt. 4, Lakeview, also was charged with aggravated menacing, resisting arrest and persistent disorderly conduct. He is currently lodged in the Logan County Jail.
About 5:10 p.m., deputies responded to the Bass Pro Shop, 11042 State St., Lakeside, Lakeview. Employees reported that a customer, later identified as Mr. Dematteo, had been ranting, making threats and using racial slurs.
He reportedly bought an item and left the store, and then came back a short time later to stick his head inside the door and say “bang.” Employees provided deputies with the suspect’s vehicle description and license plate number.
Deputies went to Mr. Dematteo’s address, as he was the registered owner of the vehicle. Russells Point Police officers and Indian Lake State Park rangers also responded.
The defendant yelled out that he had a gun on his sofa, and then he stepped outside and struggled with deputies. He went back into his residence, where deputies deployed a Taser on him.
The defendant was placed under arrest. Deputies later located a pellet gun inside the residence.
A deputy sustained minor injuries in the incident, but was not transported. Indian Lake EMS also responded to the scene.
