Seat belt enforcement initiative coincides with increased Memorial Day travel projections

Law enforcement agencies step up seat belt enforcement efforts today for their Click It or Ticket campaign, days ahead of what industry groups suggest will be an increase in travel for the Memorial Day holiday.  

Starting today, troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol join forces with six other agencies in a multi-state enforcement concentrating on seat belts.

State police agencies in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are also joining the multi-state Click It or Ticket effort, which officially continues through Memorial Day.

Locally in Logan County, troopers from the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol will be joined on the campaign by Bellefontaine Police Department officers and Logan County Sheriff’s Office deputies. A kick-off event was planned for this morning at McDonald’s, 1127 N. Main St., and a photo from the event will appear in Tuesday’s Examiner.

Of all people killed in traffic crashes in Ohio in 2012, 59 percent were not wearing a seat belt, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Too many drivers and passengers are not wearing their safety belts, and it all too often ends in tragedy,” said Colonel Paul A. Pride, Ohio State Highway Patrol superintendent.  “It doesn’t matter which state you’re driving in — I want you to get home safely.”

A total of 10,335 people who died in car accidents in 2012 were not wearing a seat belt, NHTSA reports.
