Animal complaint leads to man’s arrest on weapons charge

A complaint that started as a dispute over a dog attacking chickens ended with one man being arrested for illegally discharging a firearm, deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report.

Deputies received the first complaint at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when Wendy Simpson, 1488 County Road 173, West Liberty, said a neighbor’s dog came onto the property and killed several chickens.

While speaking with Wendy Lyons, 1576 C.R. 173, her boyfriend Casey Smith, 43, returned home irate. Deputies eventually left the scene prepared to refer the animal complaint to the dog warden for investigation.

They were called back at 5:11 p.m. when neighbors Chris and Misty Jones, 1636 C.R.173, reported that Mr. Smith had been firing his shotgun from his porch.

Mr. Smith was arrested and taken to the Logan County Jail on a discharging a firearm on or near a prohibited premise charge for allegedly shooting across the public road.
