Aaron M. Osborne, 20, of 310 S. Detroit St., was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, drug abuse, illegal use of drug paraphernalia and underage consumption of alcohol after a 10:50 p.m. Wednesday traffic stop on School Street.
He also was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead, not using a safety belt and a temporary permit violation.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department responded to witness reports around 10:45 p.m. and as they arrived the motorist was eastbound in the westbound lane driving head-on toward a cruiser in 1000 block of west Sandusky Avenue.
He drove onto School, stopped and slumped behind the wheel.
An officer reported he was nearly overcome by gasoline fumes when the defendant open the car door. He also detected an odor of burnt marijuana.
The motorist reportedly stumbled as he stepped from the car and struggled to keep his balance.
He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested.
Inside his car, officers found unopened bottles of liquor and open and unopened cans of beer. There was a five-gallon can of gasoline in the rear seat and an aerosol can in the front passenger seat.
Officers believe the motorist was “huffing” as the can was cold to touch even though the car’s heat was on. A pipe with marijuana residue was found in the car.
He was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
