NORFOLK, Va. — A former Bellefontaine resident became the first female recipient of a Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce award which has been presented annually since 1951.
Second Class Petty Officer Misty Herring was named the chamber’s Samuel T. Northern Military Citizen of the Year.
A jet mechanic with Strike Fighter Squadron Eight One, AD2 Herring, 29, was among 17 finalists for the award which recognizes personal and public contributions.
She donated more than 350 hours to the community volunteering as a sexual assault, prevention and response advocate, training more than 200 people. She also volunteered as a cardiopulmonary resuscitation instructor qualifying more than 90 people; organized and assisted with bicycle rides, walks and other functions with the Cystic Fibrosis Virginia Chapter; and worked with Green Team Sneakers to collect used sneakers for people in need.
The 12-year Navy veteran is a daughter of Rick Herring and the granddaughter of Joe and Ruth Herring, all of Bellefontaine.
