Four drivers face drag racing charges

Two motorists were charged for drag racing on Main Street around 3 a.m. today.

Mark E. Watkins, 22, of 501 Gunntown Road, Lot 89, and Steven Cottingham, 24, of 1600 S. Detroit St., Apt. 13, each was charged today with drag racing, speeding, reckless operation, failure to comply, driving on a temporary license without a valid driver’s license and driving under suspension.

Mr. Cottingham allegedly tried to elude officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department by failing to stop, parking in a nearby apartment complex and turning off his headlights. He faces an additional charge of failure to comply.

An officer was in the 1500 block of south Main Street and observed two southbound cars traveling at a high rate of speed and changing lanes in front of each other without signals.

He clocked the two vehicles at 71 mph and reported they were still accelerating.

Mr. Watkins was stopped when officers signaled in the 500 block of Gunntown Road.

Mr. Cottingham was lodged in the Logan County Jail.

• Matt Standley, 20, of Urbana, and Jordan C. Boyer, 19, of 500 Gunntown Road, Apt. E9, each was charged with drag racing, speeding and reckless operation. Mr. Boyer faces an additional citation for driving under suspension.

An officer in the 800 block of Eastern Avenue clocked the two motorists at 81 mph in a 25 mph zone around 1:30 a.m. today as they passed him side-by-side.
