Employee charged with theft from DeGraff business

Jerry E. Givens Jr., 37, of 1035 Miller St., DeGraff, was charged with felony theft Sunday after he reportedly took money over a five-month period from a business where he was employed.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the DeGraff Creamery, 229 Cretcher St., DeGraff, about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

They spoke with the owner, who reported that Mr. Givens had stopped by the restaurant that day on his day off work. The defendant allegedly purchased an item at the cash register, and then after he left, money was missing from the cash register.

The owner said similar occurrences of the discrepancies with the cash register balance had been noted at other times when Mr. Givens was working.

Deputies went to the defendant’s address and spoke with him there. He admitted to taking money from the business at other times when he was working as well. He was arrested and transported to the Logan County Jail.

Man charged after fleeing deputies during arrest

Taish Wellnitz, 33, of 4000 Alpine Parkway, Lot M2, Zanesfield, was charged with escape, a felony, along with persistent disorderly conduct after an incident early Monday morning.

Deputies responded to his address about 4 a.m. in reference to a male destroying property.

They spoke with Kellie Garner, 41, also of that address, who reported that friends had been over that evening for a bonfire. When everyone went inside, Mr. Wellnitz reportedly became agitated, slamming a refrigerator door, causing a shelf to fall inside the refrigerator.

Ms. Garner said she wanted him to leave the residence because of his intoxicated state.

Mr. Wellnitz was placed under arrest, and while inside a patrol car, he began to kick the windows. A deputy opened the door to attempt to gain control of the defendant, and then he exited the cruiser and began running away from deputies while still handcuffed.

He was quickly apprehended and then was placed in leg shackles so he could not kick the windows. Mr. Wellnitz was transported to the Logan County Jail.
