Police: Driver distracted by dropped cigarette in Sunday's fatal crash

The driver of a southbound sport utility vehicle involved in Sunday’s fatal crash was reaching for a dropped cigarette and lighter when his vehicle crossed over two lanes and struck head-on a northbound motorcycle, according to crash reports.

Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department have yet to issue any citations or charges to the driver, Christian L. Fischer, 29, of East Liberty.

The 2:45 p.m. crash claimed the life of motorcyclist, Charles S. Carpenter, 39, of Delaware, Ohio. He was transported by MedFlight to Grant Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

His passenger, Cathy L. Goodyear, 41, also of Delaware, Ohio, was flown by LifeFlight to Grant for treatment of a leg fracture.

Both vehicles came to a rest in the northbound lane on north Main Street near Stockyard Road, police report.

Mr. Fischer was transported by a Bellefontaine squad to Mary Rutan Hospital for possible injuries. He was later released, according to officers.

The investigation of the crash continues.

It is the fifth fatal crash in Logan County this year.

Initial reports indicated the crash victim was from Galion.
