UPDATE: Baked goods sell well at auction

Nearly $8,800 raised

Businesses once again stepped up to support Logan County’s best bakers at the fair’s baked goods auction Wednesday evening.

Perennial buyers stepped up, including Mobile Instruments, which paid $1,350 for 20 items, Mary Rutan Hospital, which paid $540 for 11 items, and Eichholtz, Sanford & Daring Funeral Homes which bought Addie Rodenberger’s grand champion fudge for $160 as the first item of the auction.

But there were also several new businesses, like Homecoming Family Restaurant, that stepped up to contribute to the local cause.

“This is our first time out here,” general manager Christine Ricketts said after buying three items, including Addie’s reserve champion fudge, for a combined $180.

“I haven’t decided what I’ll do with them for sure. I’ll share them, probably with the customers tomorrow.”

Addie, 15, said she was grateful for the support of the two businesses.

“I’m very happy I got to place and be here and it’s great they did so well,” she said. “Me and mom make them together. We don’t really do anything special, but I guess they turned out good.”

While the $8,795 total may not be as high as the $11,112 raised at last year’s event, the absence of three of four young cake decorators whose family pays top dollar for the finished products accounted for more than $4,200 of that difference.

Last year, the family and friends of Allison and Alex Kinney and their cousins, Lacey and Lukas Schwieterman paid a total of $5,002 for the four cakes.

This year, only Lacey entered a cake, which won second in the youth decorated cake class, and a buying group consisting of Edward Jones of Lakeview, R&K Farms, her parents and two other donors paid $800 for the lone cake.

R&K Farms and the Kinney family, however, did continue to spend, buying for top dollar grand champion pecan and reserve champion coconut cream pies made by Karol Klingelhofer for $170 and $200, respectively.

“These are the kinds of pies dad (fair board member Larry Kinney) likes,” Chris Kinney said after making the purchases.

“If I don’t ever do it again, at least I went out with a bang,” Mrs. Klingelhofer said, explaining that it has been difficult juggling the fair with responsibilities at her church’s Vacation Bible School this week.

She entered a total of 10 pies and six placed, she said.

Auctioneer Joe Jackson, who volunteered for the event along with Dennis Woodruff and David Jackson, considered the sale a success.

“It did a lot better than I thought it would. When I looked out there at 5:30 and all the chairs were empty, I thought we were in trouble,” he said referencing to the severe weather that blew through the fairgrounds, but cleared out shortly before the auction was set to begin.
