David W. Sharp, 48, of New Carlisle, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, leaving the scene of an accident, and was cited for an open container violation, a stop sign violation and a seat belt violation after an incident Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies responded to a report of a hit/skip crash in the area of State Route 274 and U.S. Route 33 about 12:35 p.m.
Mr. Sharp reportedly drove a car from the stop sign at S.R. 274 into the path of an eastbound semi tractor-trailer operated by David Cooley, 55, of Macy, Ind. The car clipped the side of the semi and then left the scene.
A caller reported seeing Mr. Sharp’s vehicle that was smoking driving on County Road 130 toward Huntsville. Several vehicles helped to block in the suspect’s vehicle in the area of the State Route 117 bridge near U.S. 33 and deputies initiated a traffic stop.
Deputies observed that the defendant showed signs of intoxication. He reportedly was uncooperative during field sobriety tests and was transported to the Logan County Jail, where he refused to take a blood alcohol content test.
