Indian Lake school board members at a regular meeting Monday approved changes to district bus routes that necessitate a change to regular school hours and result in monetary savings.
Approving a districtwide “one bus route” means that bus drivers will collect all students on their route in one trip. Starting with this upcoming school year, regular hours will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Making only one trip will save the district an estimated $100,000, Superintendent Pat O’Donnell said.
It also means elementary and high school students will be riding together, but Mr. O’Donnell said he doesn’t foresee any problems, noting the practice is common at other single-campus county schools.
The district will need two additional school buses to makes its plan work. The board at its March meeting approved the purchase of two 84-passenger buses from Cardinal Bus Sales of Lima at a cost of $92,157 and $95,157. The district only had to pay for one of the buses, as its insurance provider paid for the additional bus lost in a February crash.
Administrators said parents will receive at least three separate mailings leading up to the start of school reminding them of the one bus route format and the adjusted school hours.
