A 74-year-old North Lewisburg woman reported to deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office about 7 a.m. Wednesday she had been the ongoing victim of a telephone scam that has cost her several thousands dollars.
The woman told deputies that a man with a Jamaican accent had contacted her months before and told her she was a sweepstakes winner and that all she had to was send $200 to an address in Sylvester, Ga.
The telephone scam continued over the weeks as the woman reported to law enforcement she continued to fall for the different stories the man told her.
She reportedly sent a total of $7,000 to the Georgia address.
Sheriff’s deputies stress that residents should never give out personal information over the phone, and always be skeptical of any phone calls or e-mails that tell them they’ve won a sweepstakes, but they must first send hundreds of dollars to an address.
