Participants included Riverside student Sam Fleming, Indian Lake pupil Terrin Bok and Ben Logan student Logan Phillips, each of whom placed first at their school spelling bees and then took a 50-word online test to qualify for the regional event.

Sam received 11th place out of 59 students at the regional bee.

In the first round, Sam correctly spelled “prescription,” and “hydrology” in the second round. At the end of the second round, nearly half of the participants had been eliminated. In the third round, Sam spelled “tremulous,” but was eliminated in the fourth round with “tyrannical.”

Kyle Schroder, an 8th grader from St. Brendan School, Hilliard, won the event in the 14th and final round when he spelled "alacrity."
