Bellefontaine Middle School student Ryoma Kawakami was the top individual performer based on her test scores at the 30th annual MathCounts competition Saturday at the Apollo Career Center in Lima.

MathCounts is a national competition for grades 6 through 8, with an emphasis on solving math problems.
In addition, Ryoma and Alex Taylor qualified as individuals to compete at the state MathCounts competition March 9 in Columbus.
Ryoma also won the “Countdown Round,” which is a Jeopardy-style head-to-head elimination contest between the day’s top eight individual performers.
Overall, the Bellefontaine Middle School team finished fourth out of nine teams. Other participants included Abbi Adelsberger, Nate Kurtz, Pryce Neeld, Anya Nunez, Tristen Orahood, Khloie Slagle and Mackenzie Swartz.
The team is coached by Richard Kurtz.
