Diesel spill near Indian Lake leads to Haz-Mat response

Logan County Sheriff’s Deputies are looking for the driver of a pickup truck who left the scene of a diesel fuel leak in the Indian Lake Moose Lodge parking lot, 11044 Lake St., around 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Witnesses said the leak was discovered and the driver left before Lakeview Fire Department personnel arrived, pouring more fuel out of the bed of the truck where the leaking tank was located, and leaving a trail of liquid out of the parking lot.

Logan County Haz-Mat Chief Matt Stonerock estimated the spill left roughly 25 to 30 gallons in the parking lot, with a small amount running into Indian Lake. Personnel employed booms, floor dry and other materials to contain and soak up the spill.

Because of the nature of the spill and its proximity to the lake, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is investigating the incident today, along with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Authorities said surveillance video from the Moose Lodge will be used to identify the truck’s owner and driver.

Mr. Stonerock said nine members of his crew and Lakeview fire personnel were on scene until about 8:30 p.m. and were somewhat hampered in their efforts by foggy conditions.
