Russells Point Police credit a “vigilant neighbor” for circumventing a possible theft attempt in the area of the Indian Lake Yacht Club at the Chase Avenue dead end around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The witness reportedly observed a male wearing dark clothing tampering with a boat in the area. He claimed to have permission and said the boat belonged to a Robinson, which the witness knew was not the owner’s name.

When the witness left to contact authorities, the suspect fled the area.

Around 7 p.m., officers observed a vehicle matching the detailed description provided and initiated a traffic stop on U.S. 33, just outside the village. Given notable criminal indicators, a K9 was called from Waynesfield Police Department.

A positive indication on the vehicle led to a small drug seizure and the arrest of the driver, Anthony Robinson, 31, of 11434 Tecumseh Path, Lakeview. He was lodged at the Logan County Jail on charges of theft and criminal trespassing related to his earlier attempts to steal from the boat.

A passenger, Peggy J. Cooley, 20, of 7714 Kootenay Path, Huntsville, was charged for possession of drugs and was issued a summons.

Russells Point Police Department supports the efforts of the Neighborhood Watch group, which meets at 7 p.m. the third Thursday of each month in the Russells Point Municipal Building.
