Statewide earthquake drill is Feb. 7
Ohio Emergency Management Agency officials announce plans to participate in a third annual regional earthquake drill next month.
Participants are encouraged to drop, cover and hold on during the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut, set for 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7.
“Drop, cover and hold on” reminds people who find themselves in an earthquake to drop to the ground; take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and protect the head and neck; and hold on until the shaking stops.
The ShakeOut is organized by the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium and the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee. Ohio is one of 10 associate members of the earthquake consortium.
The date of the ShakeOut drill coincides with the anniversary of the Feb. 7, 1812, earthquake that occurred near New Madrid, Miss. That earthquake was part of a series of at least three earthquakes with a magnitude of 7 or greater during the winter of 1811-1812 that changed the landscape of the central United States.
