Ugly sweaters for a cause

For Citzens Federal Savings and Loan associate Jane Watkins, ugly never proved more beautiful.

Her homemade Merry Christmas blouse was voted online as the “ugliest” out of six total participants in a friendly competition that culminated Friday with bank staff each donning their own “ugly Christmas sweaters” to work.

By receiving the most votes for the ugliest sweater, Citizens Federal bank donated $100 to a charity of her choice — the Logan County Cancer Society.

The Logan County Cancer Society is near to Mrs. Watkins’ heart, as she has witnessed battles with cancer up close.

“Both of my parents had cancer,” she said, wiping a tear away. “My mother had breast cancer and Dad had Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

“Logan County Cancer Society paid for Mom’s wig.”

Consequently, Mrs. Watkins says she was committed to earning the most votes, and no ordinary ugly sweater would do. Hers was a homemade garment that seemed to tease each of the senses.

The gray sweater featured the words “Merry Christmas” in green and red letters across the chest. Bells adorned each shoulder and the ensemble featured a blinking red and green necklace.

In addition to $100 to the cancer society, $50 each was donated to the other named charities, which included Logan County Children’s Services Outreach; St. Vincent de Paul; Green Hills Adult Daycare; and Our Daily Bread.
