The fire was reported by the driver of a semi tractor-trailer who happened to be passing by the home, DeGraff Fire Chief David Reames said.Firefighters with the DeGraff and Quincy-Miami fire departments responded about 2:30 a.m., and remained on the scene for about three hours.
The Curtis Thacker family escaped the home without any injuries. Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Logan County’s disaster action team met with the family at the scene.
The fire also destroyed the family’s Christmas presents, according to a Logan County dispatcher.
Chief Reames said the home is a total loss, and it appears that the fire started in the northeast corner of the residence in the living room area. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
According to neighbors, the family had recently moved into the home and were in the process of remodeling the residence.
Representatives with the local Red Cross chapter have placed the family in a hotel and are assisting with other needs, including food and clothing, according to Sheri Timmers, executive director.
The Logan County Red Cross office at 105 N. Detroit St., West Liberty, is accepting donations for the family, which includes a 12-year-old boy, 9-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl.
The executive director said the family’s clothing needs have been taken care of, but gift cards would be especially helpful so that the family can buy new items as needed.
