Christmas time will look a little different than unusual this year for the Maier family of West Liberty.

The local residents won’t be cozying up together by the fireplace to unwrap presents from under their Christmas tree. Instead, Scott and Shannon Maier and their daughter, Bailey, 18, will be leaving the comforts of home to venture about 8,000 miles away to minister to orphans in Rwanda and Ethiopia.

On Dec. 26, the trio departs for their two-week trek led by the Christian organization Visiting Orphans, which works to fulfill the Biblical mandate given in James 1:27 of “visiting orphans” in their distress. They will be a part of a group of about 30 U.S. residents making the journey.
