Troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol have provided additional details about a two-vehicle crash Monday morning on State Route 117 at County Road 96 that killed a local man.
James M. Payer, 38, of Ridgeway, was operating a westbound car on County Road 96 at 5:33 a.m. when he failed to yield from a stop sign. His vehicle was struck by a southbound straight truck operated by Shadd E. Shaffer, 34, of Belle Center.
Mr. Payer was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.
The truck driver was transported by BMRT squad to Mary Rutan Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Mr. Payer’s seatbelt reportedly was not being utilized at the time of the crash.
A short time after this crash, a second crash occurred in this location involving Mr. Payer’s vehicle. A pickup operated by James Duval, 61, of Lima, struck Mr. Payer’s car and then drove off the east side of the road and struck a utility pole.
Mr. Duval did not report any injuries. Troopers report that the Ridgeway area man already had been pronounced dead at the time of this incident.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the fatal crash.
Troopers from the patrol’s crash reconstruction unit are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
The Logan County Hazardous Material Team, Richland Township Fire Department and Huntsville Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
