Ex-auxiliary officer faces charges from crash

A former auxiliary Russells Point police officer was indicted Tuesday for his part in a Sept. 13 crash on U.S. Route 33 east of County Road 10.

Ariel E. Ballesteros, 38, of Bellefontaine, faces a third-degree felony charge of aggravated vehicular assault, a fourth-degree felony charge of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and two first-degree misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

He resigned his commission with the department soon after the crash, Russells Point Chief Joe Freyhof said.

According to troopers of the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Mr. Ballesteros was westbound around 12:35 a.m. when his motorcycle hit the rear of a sport utility vehicle operated by April L. Smith, 59, of Belle Center.

The SUV traveled off the left side into the median, overturned and came to a rest on its wheels.

Mrs. Smith, her passenger Jill Woods, 59, also of Belle Center, and Mr. Ballesteros all required medical attention.

A blood test showed the motorcyclist had a blood alcohol content of 0.128 percent.



In other indictments handed up by a Logan County grand jury, Isaiah A. Luster, 24, of Loganville, Ga., was charged with possession of cocaine and trafficking in cocaine, both first-degree felonies carrying a major drug offender specification.

He also is charged with trafficking in marijuana, a fourth-degree felony, and possession of marijuana and permitting drug abuse, both fifth-degree felonies.

Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office stopped him around 1:50 a.m. Oct. 24 on U.S. 33 near State Route 347 for inoperable rear taillights.

They detected an  odor of burnt marijuana coming from the pickup truck and searched the vehicle.

Deputies seized a total of 111 grams of cocaine, 439 grams of marijuana, along with the digital scale.

Others named in indictments are:

• Monty Jeanneret, 20, of 533 Fairview Ave., Russells Point: intimidation of a witness, a third-degree felony; and obstructing justice, a fifth-degree felony;

• Steven Jeanneret, 22, of 533 Fairview Ave., Russells Point: burglary, a second-degree felony; grand theft and intimidation of a witness, both third-degree felonies; attempted intimidation, a fourth-degree felony; and possession of criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony;

• Jason Mahe, 27, of 500 E. Columbus Ave.: illegal conveyance of drugs into a correctional facility, a third-degree felony; and possession of heroin, a fifth-degree felony;

• Brock Rayles, 36, at large: theft and forgery, fifth-degree felonies;

• Matthew Bugg, 19, of 5146 County Road 152, East Liberty: two counts of unlawful sex with a minor, fourth-degree felonies;

• Nicole West, 24, of 704 N. Main St., Apt. A: theft, a fifth-degree felony;



• Johnathan Hocking, 29, of Schneider, Ind.: two counts of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of improper handling of a firearm, fourth-degree felonies; and one misdemeanor count of improper handling of a firearm;

• Joseph Knox, 36, of 320 Garfield Ave.: escape, theft and two counts of burglary, third-degree felonies; theft and safecracking, fourth-degree felonies; breaking and entering, a fifth-degree felony; and two misdemeanor counts of theft; and

• Matthew Fisher, 42, of 5394 County Road 91: having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony; possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony; and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor.
