Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department are encouraging residents not to respond to a circulating text message seeking personal information including bank and Social Security numbers.
Police are responding to complaints of unsolicited text messages from a phone number, (440) 731-6773, stating that the recipient’s bank cards had been canceled and they should call another phone number, (937) 388-9872, to have them re-activated.
Calls to that number are answered with an automated voice immediately asking for personal and bank information, Lt. Ron Birt said.
Police reported that area banks have said they’ve received multiple calls from concerned patrons who’ve received this text message. Police have said the messages are a scam and remind residents never to give out personal or banking information over the phone.
