Appeals court to hear arguments at BHS

The Third District Court of Appeals will travel to Bellefontaine High School on Wednesday to hold oral arguments in two appeals – one from Logan County and one from Marion County.

Attending the 10 a.m. oral arguments will be students from Bellefontaine High School, Benjamin Logan High School and Riverside High School.

A three-judge panel of Judge Stephen R. Shaw, Judge Vernon L. Preston and Judge John R. Willamowski will hear the oral arguments.  The Court’s fourth judge is Judge Richard M. Rogers.

In the case from Logan County, appellant Douglas L. Risner Jr., appeals from his January jury trial and convictions for robbery and tampering with evidence, and his combined four-year sentence for these convictions. He is currently lodged in the North Central Correctional Institute in Marion.

The second case from Marion County involves an appeal by Marion Forum LLC, owner of Forum Shopping Center, and seeks review of a jury verdict in favor of Appellee Lynick Enterprises, Inc. in an action for breach of lease.

At the conclusion of the oral arguments, the students also will have the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with the judges.

The Third District Court of Appeals, based in Lima, is comprised of 17 counties.

The Logan County Educational Service Center is coordinating this event with the Third District Court of Appeals of Ohio. The last time this opportunity was presented in Logan County was in 2006.
